my weight loss journey – the first 5K

on

5k

I’ve always had issues with my weight. My “spare tire”, if you will.  Heck, I may not know how to change a spare tire (that’s one of the reasons I have Greg around) but I’ve begun to figure out how to shrink one. Saturday was an important step on this journey. I did my first 5K race, the 15th Annual Independence Home Days Run. I participated with some great friends from our Weight Watchers at Work group. Robyn, my weight loss idol, talked me in to it.  My plan was to just walk the race. About halfway through it, after throwing her water on me, Robyn had me running portions of the race. I gotta say it was fun, and the sense of accomplishment from finishing the race was pretty special. And who would have thought that Michael Derr would have one of those number thingys pinned to his chest?

From my heaviest 5 years ago, I’ve now lost about 65 pounds, 15 of that in the last 2 months with the Weight Watchers program.  I’m eating better, exercising more and still have a ways to go. Greg’s been very supportive and has lost an amazing 20 pounds himself in the last 2 months.

This is my first 5K of many to come. For the next one in October, I hope to run a longer portion of the race. Back to the gym for more training.

Mike, weight loss is hard with no doubt. Seemingly small events like this one reinforce and make your journey more successful. Keep up the good work and don’t let minor setbacks impede your journey. You both have come far and definitely have reason to be proud.
